Access gates for the Thirlmere Aqueduct, the near 100 mile gravity fed “tunnel” that supplies water to Manchester from Thirlmere reservoir in the central Lakes. Built over a hundred years ago, the aqueduct is one of those ingenious engineering projects characteristic of a previous age. The elegant gates can be found almost everywhere on the route through Cumbria and Lancashire where the aqueduct passes under a boundary wall or hedge.
